Hi, newbie from the Lonestar state. Looking to get started with cichlids. Would a 30 to a 50 gal be suitable for a start? I am looking for a used tank to pick up and start building with. Everyones photos on the site look great and have inspired me. Later! :screwy:

Welcome to the site, get a 55g if you can.

I plan to not have many fish in the tank, a couple cichlids and maybe some cleaner type fish. Could you define small since this is the monster site. lol. Thnx for the advice.

Usually rule of thumb is 1inch of fish per gallon of water. For instance,if you have a 10inch long pacu that's 4inches tall, you will need 14 gallons of water.

Welcome my hoofed friend!

I'd like three feet of beer, two hertz of peanuts and a three kilowatt of brain for my friend craig!

And I have been longing to meet the thumb who came up with that rule for a long time.
He'll get all my meganewtons when we meet.

My thumb ruled:
One kick in the kidneys is better than a bottle of tequila for lunch.

a pacu in 14 gallons of water. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhhhhhhhhhhhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. thats hilarious. i get your idea, but a little misleading to the neophyte's out there, i mean maybe 14 gallons of space in a huge tank. but come on. pacus get bigger than most people could ever hope to manage.
