im goin to pick up a 180G soon and its really scratched up.
but i was thinkn is it possible to even buff the really big scratches or are those impossible to mend...
and if there is a way of fixing them without buffing what can i do to fix it. i am willing to put in work to fix it becuse i got the tank for $100 :)

I don't think you'd want to use a regular buffer. It would create circles in the surface. If you have a local dealer that carries acrylic tanks they probably sell a repair kit.

Basically you use a rubbing compound of varying grits and go from the most course to the finest. Rubbing in different directions using a soft cloth and changing with each new grit.

The manufacturer of your new tank probably has an online presence. Find it and e-mail them asking if they sell a repair kit. Dan

Working it by hand is going to be a big job. You will be fine using an orbital buffer or sander (if using sandpaper, only use fine grit and wet sand). Either will be fine if using buffing/polishing compound. If you want a hand finish, you can use the orbital to do the bulk work and then do the last by hand.

Congrats on the find.

Heavy (deep) scratches you don't polish out, you just polish the scratch itself, the water should make most of them invisable.

Check Tongue33's link, he did a great job.

And CHOMPERS is right, an orbital sander/polisher won't give you swirl makes, but if you push to hard enough, on anything you can burn the plexy.

If you can find something scrap to practice on, all the better.

Best of Luck,

Dr Joe
