bufo alvarius

Hiya delamorte! Welcome to MFK. This is another of the psychotoxic bufos, target of toad lickers everywhere, heheh. They are quite common in Arizona and parts of northern Mexico, they are also called Sonoran toads or Colorado river toads. They are easy to keep, just treat like large Fowler's toads. The species has no federal controls on it while living but the extract(bufo toxins), and the dried or powdered skins are illegal. The Bouncingbearbotanicals site sells male/female pairs for $275 but I think that is a ripoff since they show up in Tuscon in large #s during the spring rains. Know anybody there? I bet an ad at the college would get you a pair for $100 + shipping. The Epidemiologist I work for in Louisiana had a collection of several types of toxic bufos and part of my job was to keep them fed, crickets, earthworms mainly, something to dig in, a water bowl, room temps. are all they need.

i volunteered at the local zoo here in town and they had about 6 behind the scenes. they're alot of fun when it comes to toads especially when they are feeding. that's what the zoo has them for, they're live food trash compactors. i don't think they ever turn down a meal. they're greedier than oscars!
