OH...IO
Any electronics junkies out there? I'm picking up a 55" flatscreen and want to set up a home theater system. What do I need? Direct TV, blu ray, receiver, sound system etc. Recommendations?

Nothing crazy. Best bang for the buck. I'm leaning toward a LG or Samsung lcd led tv and a Sony blu ray. What type of audio /receiver should I get?

OK FIRST ISSUE YOUR TV...lol

f any moron at best buy tells you to get led they are idiots... please don't listen lol get a plasma... unless you get there top top of line it will be cheaper than led... panasonic is using pioneer's technology in their new 3d sets. Plasma is top of the line hands down... the 3d led's can't even come close to panasonic... burn in is b.s. and happened when the first plasmas hit shelves(back when sony made a plasma...wow years fly)... My buddy installs tv's in houses and the rich peckers are still buying the no longer made left over Pioneer Elite's($$) and the others buy the new top of the line 3D panasonics...

lcd and now led suffer from ghosting during sporting event's(don't notice it too much on the new led's during regular television) but now with the 3D's the top of the line led's are getting ghosting(will never end)...

people who come to my house including my 2 buddy's with LED's get blown away by my 58" samsung plasma(top of the line last year) read up for yourself though and talk to an expensive ma and pa store that can't compete with chains... they really know what's going on... or at least should!

as for sound... some of those combos are absolute garbage so be carfull and what are you willing to spend??

blu ray player... ps3 slim is your best bet... it is still the number one blu ray player you can get and is always being updated(with this in mind it's got motion like the wii, but better if you want that option or any other hi-def gaming) even if you don't game just get it for multimedia for sure!! o yea... it also has netflix app with hi-def episodes of tv and videos...

finally lot's of people like directTV, myself included(grew up with it) but i made the switch to Dish.. and they have awesome HD i feel that as long as you stay away from cable and just choose one you'll be good!!

yea so anyways what you looking to spend on surround?:naughty:

ok saw other post... get excited talking electronics and just started typing

best bang for buck... i'd go with a Yamaha surround sound.. comes with receiver and speakers... or a lower end Onkyo.. i think price wise you will get more if you go Yamaha...

With the tv.. if you got the room i would kick the 200 more or what ever and get the 58" for sure!

good luck with purchases... you can order your surround on newegg.com and get a nice deal instead of stores...if you have any questions feel free to PM me... don't mind helping a fellow MFKer!!

O really important... if you get the plasma make sure it has the 24p(i think all new ones do)... plasma takes blu ray and just owns it!!! you will never go to a movie theater ever again because the quality won't compare...lol

What do I need to spend on surround? lol Interesting insight on plasma. I was under the impression that they are the older technology and will be disappearing at some point.

nah lcd can't compete that's why they came with led to improve it... and it still can't hang... read up on it! lcd became a hit only because of the burn in b.s. not because it is superior...

surround depends what your willing to spend... you want something that is at least dolby true hd 5.1 as most your blu rays put that out... surround is something you could buy second hand off craigslist too... some people update their home theater like we change underwear. also you can hear if speakers are blown and see what it can do before you buy it while at the the person's house...not a whole lot to a used system... just speakers and receiver ya know?

well i'm out... i'll check the thread tomorrow... good luck

Gasha is right with regards to the plasmas. Panasonic are great, I have a 50" viera that is great. Even the tv's speakers are pretty good. New technology makes burn in a thing of the past.

I bought a 2.1 set of Onkyo speakers after doing some reading as they are supposed to be one of the best. The control unit is built into the subwoofer, it may only be a 2.1 set but it can be expanded, has optical inputs, hdmi inputs and the small speakers make my floor and sofas shake when the movie goes bang whilst remaining crystal clear with no "farting" even at full volume.
They were quite expensive though, at about £300 ($550) for a 2.1 system. Each small speaker is about £70.

I did have a Goodmans 5.1 set before this, again with the control unit built into the subwoofer. It was pretty good and cost a wallet concious £120 with dvd player, bought about 4 years ago so it will be cheaper now. No HDMI or optical though.
The Yamaha sound bars are apparently a decent budget option if you can get one 2nd hand as brand new you could buy a decent 5.1 system with the same money.

Ok here goes nothing!!!

TV:

Blu Ray player:

Surround Sound package: (I have this same one, pisses the neighbors off all the time!)

You said you wanted LG so that is the TV i picked for ya. I prefer Sony imo. The Yamaha surround sound package I listed is the one that I own and it works great. I put the PS3 on there for a Blu Ray player cuz thats what I use as my player and I think it is the most bang for your buck! Play some video games, watch some movies, and if you connect it to the internet you can surf MFK inbetween movies. Now keep in mind that you are going to need a handful of cables that are really cheap and depending on you set up you may need a lot of them. If you have any more questions please PM me. Good luck!
