help please ...

im in the process of building a stand for a 125g. but i wont be using a center brace because i plan on putting another 125 underneath. has anyone built a stand similar to mines?

on the front and back 72" stretch i have angle irons for added support. btw, im suing 2x6s and for the post 4x4, notched style.

give me your input guys on any added support since i wont have a center vertical brace in the middle.

thanks!

heres a pic

I would use deck screws in place of nails. Take the metal off put another cross brace on top, like the one on bottom. Then skin it top and bottom with 3/4" plywood and more deck screws.

I would definitly add one or two crossbraces going between the two long 2x6. Also sheeting the top back and sides with plywood will make the stand stronger and les likly to twist. And if you plan on keeping te angle iron make sure to shim up te rest of the top so that you have a smooth even surface.

Lose the angle iron, Dont think that it will do you any good. Agree with the cross braces, I personally would space them evenly at 14-16" centers. then add your top, and I would add ply under the top "beams" sandwiching it. Not needed, but if it would help you sleep then it is ok. Also agree with the ply casing will help with the rigidity.

Good luck

I definitely think you should add a cross brace in the center of the span.

thanks guys for the input, i did forget to mention that i will adding adding two cross braces on top and bottom. one is already nailed in on the bottom.

i will leave the angle iron there, and apply a 3/4" plywood to the top and bottom. i cant apply ply to the back of the stand because it ill hinder me using HOB filters which i use if i put in another tank on the bottom.

im using nails, long nails for this stand. this would suffice right?

so theres no need for vertical bracing in the middle right?

Really lose the angle. From the pic it looks to be pretty thin
and it is not gonna give you any real strenght. You should
use deck or drywall screws instead of nails. One I feel they
are stronger, and if you need to it is easier to disassemble.
If you are not going to put a solid back on it then cut out
triangle braces of 3/4" ply and screw them on each corner in
the back to reduce swaying.

honestly you will need 3 braces minimum 2 in the rear and 1 in the front 125 can run as heavy as 1500 to a tone all together im assuming you already have a reinforced place picked out in your house for the 4000 lbs of added weight?
