Looking to upgrade my koi to a larger setup. I've always heard that you can simply build a box of plywood in the shape of a toy box (for instance), add and staple in a pond liner and your ready to go. Is there more to the story? I'm aiming for a setup slightly smaller than a twin size bed, I definitely don't want it to collapse from the weight of the water. Tips, advice? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Instead of just throwing a pond liner in why not just put a waterproof expoxy? But if that idea ain't going to work then yeah technically you could put a pond liner in, but dont staple it,
You'd have to glue it down, and for a box that size your looking at atleast 1" thick wood, preferably with corner braces and make sure it's well screwed together,

I'm just concerned about the design at this point.. haven't got that far yet. Would a good amount heavy duty hob filters and power heads do the trick?

I'm new to this.. sorry

Canisters may be a better option, ideally go with a sump, but if the tank sits on the ground then a sump would be tricky, but not impossible, just need to use a pump to get the water in and out if the sump.

A pond that size I would build a frame out of 2x4s just like walls of house. A single one on bottom, vertical ones every 16", then a double top plate. If the water is over 24" deep I would do a triple top plate. Then line the inside with plywood then put the liner in. By doing it this way you can use r13 insulation in between studs if you want but with koi you will not have to keep warm. I did a 8' by 2' by 2' this way using osb board and a pond liner. I put Styrofoam on top of osb so liner had a soft smooth surface to lay on. Also not a good idea to set on floor so build a short stand or set on bricks to keep off ground unless the bottom is treated wood.
