I've recently come into possession of a couple large pieces of 1/4 inch tempered glass (84"x24"). Now i know it's not advisable to make aquariums out of tempered glass as they shatter on impact as opposed to cracking, but this will not be an issue for me as the likelihood of the glass pane being subject to impact is extremely low. That being said, i understand tempered glass is 5-6 times stronger than plate glass.
Would the 1/4 inch glass be strong enough to make a tank that is 84"Lx36"Wx24"H?
Looking forward to some input!!

most commercially sold or stock aquariums use tempered glass 10g-265g for the bottom panes and or the whole tank depending on size quite often... tempered glass isnt the issue... its still the thickness of material that determines your water height... for ur proposed tank dims... i would recommend 1/2" acrylic at 24" height or 5/8" glass to be the bare minimum. 1/4" tempered may support 18" height and id still feel uneasy over 12" using 1/4" of any material.

I understand that is the glass thickness requirements for plate glass. But as i mentioned earlier, i am under the impression that tempered glass can withhold much more pressure than plate glass.

Dont risk it. At 84 inchs long it could be a huge problem. I would just invest in some thicker glass
