building a tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you can pretty much make the fiberglass look any way you like

i was thinking of building a tank out of acrylic but fiberglass and plywood might be a bit cheaper. the dimensions of the tank i was thinking of was 24" x 24" x 60". i have found fairly cheap acrylic prices but then you have to consider the shipping. were you just going to use automotive fiberglass?

with fiberglass you could make the tank look like pretty much anything. only limited by your imagination:) my only question is what is the weight difference going to be between using glass, acrylic, or fiberglass and plywood?

You don't want to use fiberglass, it releases toxins even after it's cured. Use marine epoxy, it's totally safe. And if you use plywood forget about having any plecos, they'll eat through the epoxy to get to the wood beneath it.

theres alot of great info in this thread about building a new tank and all, but where can one get the materials for building this stuff. any sites who have custom orders for acrylic or glass?

what does fiber glass look like when its done? I've never even heard of making a tank out of it.
Here is what mine looks like. We are working on gathering materials to turn it into a wall so the black wont be seen. If that wasnt the case i would replace the black with matching wood. You can make them look very nice. Just put some thought into it:D
