Ok so I moved and finally set up my 55 gallon tank again and the first fish I bought was a pike cichlid at a lfs. Most likely its a belly crawler? He's very active and is eatting already...no problems. Well I can't decide what I want to put in there with him. Other than a black ghost knife...my gf really wants it. Any other suggestions? Maybe something that doesnt get too large...I know the knife does but I'm pretty sure that takes some time so if need be we could sell it or upgrade. Alittle about the tank, its got a dark substrate, I got a cave out of rocks in the middle, and a few plastic plants here and there but plenty of swimming space.

Any smaller to medium sized SA/CA cichlids should do fine. Try to avoid any overly aggressive or large growing fish (unless you plan on upgrading to a larger tank in the near future).

your tank size and stock is limiting your options you say he is a belly crawler so hes at the bottom most of the time you could get a few needle fish they call them needle nose gar they grow to about a foot and are entertaining to watch but eat live foods mostly and stay towards the top of the tank most of the time you should be able to keep 2 maybe more

I wouldn't get the needlenose fish, as they will need an upgrade from a 55g. Plus they can be very skittish.

I would aim for either some kind of pleco (NOT a common), and maybe a couple of the smaller cichlids.

If you need some ideas, check out www.liveaquaria.com. They have all sorts of fish listed, plus some general tank size requirements.

some smaller cichlids would work. u can go with a convict, firemouth, maybe some geophagus species.

also some larger tetras might be nice. maybe a few congo tetras.

Well I just picked up a pair of pictus cats today. Perfect addition to the tank IMO. The pike wasnt so sure about them at first but after I feed them all some sinking carnivore pellets and the cats went nuts and left food chunks everywhere the pike started learning and started following them around eatting the left over pieces. Now theyre a odd school of three lol. We are goning to get the black ghost knife tomorrow and I do plan on upgrading eventually. Maybe a 125 or 220. But for now I think I'm going to get a school or gouramis, maybe pearl or the blue/gold variant and that should fill the tank up nicely.

ditto the geophagus, I have a couple with my pike and they do great.... (they actually do great with all my SA cichlids)

Thanks for the suggestions guys but I ended up doing a sort of world grab bag in my tank. So other than the pictus I got now a black ghost knife, and 3 three spot gouramis and I'm picking up a pair of pearls today. And eventually I'll get a pleco...not sure what kind yet...maybe a bristlenose or one that doesnt get too large. Deff not a common.
