So everyone has built monster tanks. Theres no question there are some great designs out there. But when it comes to a sensitive fish, like fw rays, some conciderations should be taken into account. I know they need more foot print then depth, and octagonal corners (135 degree) so they don't get themselves pinned in a corner. But what else should be considered? Specifically for the breeders, if you could rebuild you ray tanks, what would you do differently?

Never heard of the corners degree having any issues? What kind of rays are we talking about? I've only heard of that issue with certain marine sharks and things of that nature. As far as breeding goes ponds seem to be pretty popular

They are fw rays, from the amazon primarily. I guess in essense the tank i am lookign to build will be a pond, but a big L to make it a bit more accessible. If you dont think a ray will get caught in a corner then maybe i'll stay with my simpler design of two rectangles that abut each other.

Look for a thread by Didysis. If I am not mistaken he has an L-shaped 600 with multiple rays in it. Everyone I know has most of their rays in rectangle and square tanks or ponds with no issues. Mine have been in a rectangle tank their whole lives with zero issues. Never heard of corneds being an issue.

Open water marine sharks are the ones who get caught in corners, also jellys, but ive also never heard this for fw rays. Maybe open water rays like cownose or "batray" but i agree you should be find with a square or rectangle. Y dont u just setup an intex pool with liner its a cheap option and provides alot of footprint in a circle.

I'll look for didysis' thread. I heard somewhere that its not needed but better for them? idk it was mostly in passing. I would do a pool, but i already have a pile of glass, and a 81 x 32" tank for donation. Also, i would have to insulate the bottom of the pool from the cement floor, with i suppose 1.5" ridgid foam insulation would be able to do. Kinda want to talk to some breeders, see if theres anything they've done that they wish they hadn't or anythign they hadn't done that wished they had. So many options and seeing as rays are a lifetime project, i want to do it right the first time.

Most of the breeders I see in Thailand are using concrete pools with tile sides and bottoms and one viewing window.
I also dont think insulation will be needed for the concrete as it will eventually warm itself up and help hold the heat. There are so many choices and so many ways that work for so many people with successful breedings.

haha well i can't do a concrete tile pond, though i woudl love too. Well its a basement of a split level ranch, so im afair the floor woudl act as a sink, suckign heat from the tank to heat the whole floor, not just what is under the pool. yea, pretty much anythign they fit in seems like they can breed in. Theres a breeder local to me in Maine that is friends with a friend of mine so i may talk to him see what hsi advice is, and possibly get a female from him when the time comes.

Sorry was an L now just a large rectangle. If I build a large pond vs 2 large tanks I plan to build an L shape, main reason is that it will be super easy to divide if needed and also take up the least overall room with still being super super large. I figured a 12x 12 L would be amazing. And you could put two dividers if needed put all pups In middle area split off from the legs and that would be one really amazing setup. And corners wise I don't see any issues with normal ones.
