OK my friend just bought a 75g it is a reef ready setup with the overflow built in the corner and 2 holes drilled in the bottom. How does this set up work? Should there be a standpipe in there? If so how tall? any other help would be graet thanks.

The water goes over the holes in the overflow box and down the pipe. You don't need a standpipe, but it is a good way to put some mechanical filtration on it. Take a piece of pvc tubing and wrap it with prefilter material and zip tie it on. Depending where you drill the holes determines the height the water from the holes in the overflow falls. the higher up the less distance it falls, the less noise it makes. Make sense?

so the pvc should be a couple inches from the top of the tank then? just leave the top open and the water will flow down??

You could also fill the overflow with bioballs and top it off with filter wool. This is a good place for the wool as it is easy to change. This setup will also reduce the noise of the falling water, but a durso standpipe would be quieter ... only you won't have the additional filtration then.
