Ok so i just build a raised 4' x 4' x 2' pond in my garage. I framed it and insulated it like the walls of a house. I was planning on going wet dry with a sump.
i understand how overflow boxes and sumps work as i have one running on my 210 gallon currently.
but i have some questions since this will not have an overflow box.

1. how high in the water level do i put my drain that will drain to the wet dry?
2. what size plumbing will i need to make it drain as much water as i will be pumping?

Anybody have some answers for me that would be greatly appreciated.

1. as high as you want your water level to be and it must be higher than the wetdry.
2. how much water are you pumping?

i am going to run a 1200 gph pump.

i want my water level to be high in the pond, it will be higher than the wet dry as the pond is on a stand.

Ahh ok the pond is up off the ground...cool. 1200gph a single 1.5" would be at its limit I think...so I would do a 2" or two smaller sizes. Just put the intake of whatever you use for the overflow of the pond up high so the water is where you want it.

That is from the pond to the sump. You use whatever the pump needs to bring it to the pond...what pump are you using?

I must be missing something....you said you understand how overflows and sumps work right? Overflow in pond....pump in sump pumps water into pond...overflow feeds sump....as long as you have a big enough drain line on your overflow and your whole system has enough water in it you are fine.

ok, maybe i am overthinking it. i was just thinking that the pump may put out too much water and overflow my pond. Or the pond may put out too much water and overflow my sump.

and yes i do to a point understand how it works, but aquaiums have overflows that are slotted and adjust to more or less flow...right?

The slots just act as strainers. As long as your drain line can handle the 1200gph you pump is going to put out your fine. Unless your overflow stops working and then you water in the sump gets pumped into the pond and it overflows and your pump burns up :D
