i had a crazy idea to build my own sump tommorow my missing peice will be coming in the mail the 800gph over flow box. i made it out of a old ten gal. tank and plexi glass. and a 500 gph return pump i will post pictures as soon as it gets running and i hope for no flood it should be cool

Be sure to post some pics with a step by step of how you did it. I'm about to turn a 20g into a sump so I could use all the info, tips and tricks I can get!

im going to run ball valves on the inlet and the return i hope that will do it fingers crossed let you know waiting on ups right now

i will its real simple just got to go slow and make sure your room dont turn in to a pond i will have some pics up soon im waiting on ups right now

Don't use a ball valve on the inlet (overflow). The overflow will not flow more than the return pump so it's not necessary and would be an additional risk.

I'd like to see the setup, but like stated above you should be careful that the 10 doesn't overflow if the power dies:)

If you're using an overflow that creates a siphon then a ball valve is a very useful addition though.

Only to quiet it, but that's risky too. If there is a slight obstruction when a HOB overflow is valved down it can cause the tank to overflow.

Very true, I've got a half closed ball valve running on my PVC overflow to make it silent and while it took a while to tweak to perfection, the chances of it being obstructed are very low, and the only risk is that my return baffle will run dry (and possibly damage my pump) if it does get blocked.

All it takes is a dead fish. I learned the hard way:(
