I had a 50 W red bulb on my Crested Gecko tank. I had it timed to be on during the day and off at night (the house is warmer at night because the furnace goes higher). The bulb only lasted me two weeks. Did it significantly lower the life because I have it set to turn on and off by a timer, or did I just have a bad bulb?

Timers do not shorten the life of a bulb... so you had a bad something....

Ok. I know they won't shorten the life of a normal bulb or flourescent bulb. I was just wondering if these reptile bulbs were built to stay on 24/7.

This happened to me a couple times with bulbs, but they went out in a couple days. Really frustrating.
I bought another set, put the useless ones in the new box and took it back.

Is your house really getting cold enough to even need the bulb? I am down south where there is no such thing as cold weather so I do not know what average house temps are in the winter....in a place where there actually is winter....
But I ask because Cresties are good with cooler temps than what most other reptiles like, therefore they rarely require any heat. If your house stays above 65 degrees theres not a real need for a heat bulb.

You might just have had a bad bulb. You never know how well they were taken care of on their journey to the pet store. Could have been dropped down a flight of stairs, lol.

Yeah, or like the last poster, someone could have used it for a while and then returned it to the store..lol

I could have contributed though, because every time I move the top back to get access to the tank, I probably shake the bulb a little.

I got a 40 watt bulb yesterday, and it is way less effective than the 50 watt. My Crested's tank is not getting higher than 68-69.

My house always stays above 65. Just barely though...If I didn't use a bulb during the day, the tank temp would probably be around 66. I am wondering if you guys think if this temp will keep him healthy. Most of the caresheets I have read say to keep the tank around 72-78 during the day.

Have you tried covering the top with plastic wrap or plexiglass to help hold in the heat and humidity?

Yeah, I've covered most of the top, although there are still gaps. This helped tremendously with humidity. This 40 W light is weak! I'll see how warm it gets today. If it doesn't get above 70, I'll probably just go get a 50 w.
