Hey guys. Although I've had my 120 gallon aquarium for a couple years now, I've never really paid much attention to the lighting. Now that I've added live plants to my tank, I would like to upgrade my lighting. The plants I have are low light plants such as java fern, and anubias. Either way, I've had the same light bulb ever since I got the tank four years ago, and I think its time for a change. The bulb I have now is an eclipse F18T8 natural daylight. I don't even know how many watts that is. My tank consists of two hoods containing 24" bulbs. My question is this: I would like to keep the actual hood, but can I just upgrage to a new type of bulb? How do I know if the new bulb is compatible? Any recommendations?

you should be able to get any Normal Output (NO) bulb that is the right length. you are running a T8 right now and i would stay with that just to keep it simple. the only way to get higher light is to buy all new fixtures or a retro fit kit. or adding more hoods.

when you go to pick out a bulb most people stick to bulbs in the 6500k to 10000k. and different bulbs will have a different visual to them. see if the store has any bulbs in use on there tanks so you can look. hope that helps

Edit: plants can use 5000k to 10000k roughly the two most popular ones are 6500k and 10000k

Thanks for the information. Are you saying that if I get a new type of bulb, it won't fit in the hood?
