I am getting ready to start a sump filtration system on a new tank. I would like to drill the back panel of the tank to add my bulk heads. I allready have the diamond saw for 1'' bulkheads so that is what i am using. My question is where would the best location be for the holes? Like all at the top and centered. Or inlets on one end and outlets at the other? Top or bottom or middle? I have seen both but i do not know if there is any advantages over one or the other. Also i will be have about 1000gph running thru this system so how many 1'' bulkhead drains do I need to drain 1k plus gallons an hour??--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Also I have been searching for this info all over the net and I can not find anything on the piping coming thru the back panel of the tank. Is there a reason for this? And is there a special name for a overflow that comes thru the back panel and not so much over. Cause if so that would be why i can not find any info. Also the tank is a perfecto 125 and the bottom is tempered that is why they are coming thru the back.--------thanks alot and please help.

Three one inch bulkheads going to the sump. One returning.

All located as close to the water line as possible. Allow for the outside diameter of the bulkhead in your placement so that the tank trim or hood does not interfere with assembling the bulkhead.

Left, right, or center does not matter.

Thanks alot

Double check the diameter hole you need for the bulkheads you are using, I think your 1" bit will be too small. Take a look at this chart, even a standard 1/2" bulkhead needs a 1.125" hole.

You may be able to squeeze a 3/4" DIY pipe fitting bulkhead through a 1" hole. (3/4" male/female pipe fittings from hardware store) To be safe I would recommend 4 drains and one return if you go that route. 2 drains in each corner and return in the middle. I recently put two 1.5" DIY bulkheads in the back corners of a 180 and am happy with the result.

Actually you read that wrong. The OP said:

Actually I did the math, and three is the minimum. Two will do the job on their own, but you want an extra in the event of a dead fish plugigng one. Of course there is nothing wrong with symmetry. Four plus one will look better.

yea thanks for clearing that up--chompers----------My diamond hole saw is 1 3/16. And its a little loose on a 1'' DIY bulkhead fitting. I have put a few in other small tanks. Allways in the bottom thou.

I'll be damned if mrunlucky wasn't psychic or something. Measure the inside of your bulkhead. A one inch bulkhead is going to have a 1.5" inside diameter. There is a lip on the inside that is 1" in diameter. The reason is that the size of the bulkhead is based on the pipe that will fit in it. The pipe is sized based on its inside diameter (schedule 40, not sch20). It sounds like you actually have half inch bulkheads. If that's the case you will need four times as many holes. The solution will to be to use threaded pvc conduit fittings rather than bulkheads. Or just spring for the proper sized drill. They aren't expensive if you know where to get them. If you get one from TDK Tools on eBay, it will cost less than what you would spend on the bulkheads.

Ok why the subject is still up. Lets say i go ahead and install 4 drains and one return. All DIY pvc piping 1'' fittings. Would i need to install a valve on the drains so that they do not drain more than my pump. Or will they only drain what the pump puts back in the tank. -----------And will 4 be over kill for 1000gph thru DIY 1'' bulkhead fittings on the drains? Is there a thread some where that states how much GPH a certain pipe size/ bulkhead size will drain?-----thanks again

It is imperative that they drain more than what the pump can send to the tank. Obviously it is so that the tank won't flood. A valve can be added at the sump for noise control (only if it is a problem).

The placement of the bulkheads at the water line is what keeps the tank from emptying into the sump.
