Just got a big tank and would like to put light colored sand of some sort in it. Any recommendations on type of sand, how deep it needs to be (3"-4"?), where I can get it in bulk to keep cost down?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I use manards play sand its like 2 bucks for a 40 lb bag just rinse it good with a hose in a bucket make sure all the fine particles are washed out I do. Around 10lbs in a 5 gallon bucket the more small particals you get out of it the better. And how deep you want it in the tank is up to you

Pool filter sand is the cheapest i can think of. I use quikcrete pfs it was 50lbs for under $6. You can find it at home depot or leslies pool supply. It is a heavy sand so no worries of it getting into your filters, just have to rinse it well. I use no more than 2-3" in my tanks, but that all depends on your needs.

But its very important that you wash the sand clear before you put it in the tank the first time I did it I just did a light rinse and put it in the tank it took crap loads of water changes and it took a month to clear up. The last time I washed sand I took my time and did a good wash on the sand and my tank was clear the next morning

play sand is junk
get white pool filter sand from any pool store it stays on the bottom and dose'nt get into your filters

100% correct. Playsand is junk. When I first used it it was great. After having it in a tank for around three months it turned into a mess. It traps to many pieces of food and poo. I dreaded feeding my loaches and rays as it would turn into a cloud of garbage.
Go with pool filter sand you will not regret it.

I like the finer play sand better then pool filter sand. I have never had problems with and of my filters. And some of my cichlids pick it up and move it all the time

Thanks for the suggestions!

I will look into the pool filter sand. I definately don't want anything that will be clouding up the water when a fish darts off.

Lake Michigan, hurry before it freezee.
