Hey everyone,

I am in the process of setting up a 135 that I got from craigslist. It has dual overflows each has two holes drilled in the bottom of the tank.

I have never worked with drilled tanks, or PVC / Plumbing.

Each overflow has 2 different sized holes, the larger hole is 1 3/4" and the smaller is 1 1/2":

When I purchased the tanks the previous owner through in three bulkheads, 2 for the smaller holes and 1 for the larger hole. He also included some of the PVC piping that he was using.

They are threaded on the inside and out. The smaller bulkheads can fit a 3/4" schedule 40 PVC fittings:

Here is where my questions start: 1) The white sched. 40 PVC fitting only screws in as far as is seen in the above picture. Is that something to be concerned about? Or should I get a fitting with shorter threaded that will screw tightly to the top of the bulkhead?

2) The white sched. 40 PVC fittings say 3/4" on them, so the grey pipe is 3/4" PVC correct? larger bulkhead has a hole that is 1 1/4" in diameter. So I assume that bulkhead will take 1" PVC, is that correct?

3) In my head I had planned to have one of the overflows go to my 30 gal wet/dry sump. The other overflow I was going to use with my Fluval 404 Canister filter, the larger hole for the intake and the smaller for the return. However, recently I did some reading that led me to believe that this may be a poor idea. Basically the article said that using overflows as the intakes for canister filters was a poor idea because the setup will eventually cause the filter to fail, because the overflow's rate of flow may be different than what the canister was designed for. Is this true, have any of you tried this?

Here is the return that came with the tank, I have another one that is identical to this one:

I plan on using them, but I have questions about the intakes.

4)Do I just fit the larger bulkheads with 1" PVC pipe that are the length of where I want the desired depth of my tank? do I need to put an elbow on the top of it?

This is what it looks like in my head, and yes that is MSpaint :D :

would an elbow on the larger pipe reduce noise?

Thanks in advance for all of your comments, I apologize for my ineptitude.

As far a question 3 goes, I think it is null at this point. I just read that 1" PVC will only flow about 600 gph via gravity. So If I want 6x turnover through my sump (~800gph) I will have to use both 1" Overflows as intake for my sump, otherwise I will be pumping more water than is coming into the sump.

With that being said, I will end up using both smaller bulkheads for 3/4" returns.

If I go with a SEN 900 pump that does 800 gph @ 5 ft of head, Will I lose flow if I split the plumbing into 2x 3/4" returns using a T or Y?

I know very little about this, I just want to get pointed in the right direction before I flood my basement, burn up a pump, cause catastrophic failure, etc etc

Elting44 i have alot of experenise with over flows and bulkheads. if u get a chance pm me your email and i can help alot with this.

3/4" return pvc is fine to return water to tank. thats a perfect fit. made 1 1/4" durso pipes and use them for each intake on each overflow.

durso pipe
http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

there very easy to make and should have no problem. if you use 1" pvc instead of 1 1/4" it will be loud and not move alot of water. i have a 300 gallon with dual over flows (durso pipes) and use a mag 18 to return all water to tank. works great and keeps up good.

oh also sorry in my tank i use 1" bulkheads for the durso pipes. so on the bottom of the durso pipe it goes from 1" threaded to 1 1/4" slip. then i use 3/4" bulkheads for the return line from the mag 18.

as for your first pic about it not threading all the way in your fine 100% as it will be in the water anyways.

Thank you so much, those durso pipes look like they will be ideal.

As far as the rest of the plumbing goes, just use 1" PVC / Vinyl Tubing from each of the bulkheads down into the sump, then have the return from the pump go up into a 3/4" PVC and then split into 2 x 3/4" via a T or Y or should I go with larger diameter on the return before the T / Y?
