I have had a lot of questions about this 125 I bought. I have come to the decision, with much input and advice from you, to run a sump and a canister filter. So my dilemma is this," I have never drilled the back of a tank for bulkheads before and if I break the back panel doing it I am going to be real PO!" So question #1: How hard is it? and Question #2: Is there an advantage to bulkheads over HOB overflows? Once again any input is appreciated.

my tank was built in 1997... didnt dare to drill it so i used a CPR overflow box. works like a charm. i think the only downside of using a hob overflow is the bulkyness.

I have ran hob overflows on a 300g for 4 years. One was a CPR and the other was Esopps. As long as you get a good quality HOB you will be fine. dont get the cheapos off of ebay they cant handle nearly the flow that they state. Advantage in my opinion with drilled tanks is that they cant fail. There are modifications that you can make to HOB by hooking up powerheads to them so they will never lose suction in a power outage but like I said just get a good one and make sure there are no air leaks and you will be fine

i find the HOB overflows to be quite noisy no matter how many trips ive tried. But i believe it also depends on the style, mine is not the more common "tube" style which i guess are supposed to be quieter but have more problems.
with the amount of money i spent on building and time and trial and error and electricity vs the can i have on my other tank that was simply plug in a couple plastic parts and turn it on, i would rather just do a canister filter. My experience and opinion though.

You could always try a pvc overflow lots of info on mfk if you search for them

I've got a drilled corner overflow in a 90 gal and 2 HOBs one in a 55 and one in the 125. Personally the corner one I have is much easier to work with than the HOB but imo I dont notice too much of a difference. Except maybe the drilled are quieter in my case...

Also its super easy to use a HOB, I use Eshopp's and it so far hasn't failed me in any power outages!

Thank you all once again! Any advise i have followed from MFK has never steered me wrong. Thanks Again, it is much appreciated
