I read an article on planetcatfish.com that said males have longer pelvic fins. When does this develope? And at what size/age can these guys breed?

I think it may be 2"-3". I do not how to tell male from female, but having a group of 6 is best.

yeah, i would think a species-only tank, or a bunch of dithers that will swim mid-top level and not eat the fry. i say that because in my experience they can be quite aggressive about territory, so less fish wandering around would give them less to worry about. get a bunch of young ones, fill the tank with caves and wood, maybe a sand substrate so they can dig out hiding places, and a strong water flow to mimic the natural river conditions where they are found. feed them well, lots of veggies and bloodworms to fatten them up and condition them for spawning.
