I got 3 bullheads from Arkansas that came with feeders and I was wondering what species they were.

I think that they are Ameiurus brunneus the snail bullhead, but I could be wrong so I would like a second opinion.

Ignore the ameca splendens fry in the background. I put the specimen container on a tank to utilize the flourescent lighting for better pictures.

UPDATE: It seems that it could be the brown bullhead because there are no reported findings of snail bullheads in Arkansas...

Still need a second opinion though.

dark barbels, either black or brown bullhead hard to tell:screwy:

brown have 5-8 large saw-like teeth on rear of
pectoral fin spine

You're not using us to ID these fish so you can then sell them are you?

nope. I always wanted bullheads. I will keep them.

I paid a pretty penny for them at a local club auction anyway.

Snail and flat bullheads are found over this way and look very similar to each other. Both have a very distinct dark blotch at teh base of the dorsal fin. They are both rather mottled and have some black edging on the fins. THey are very nice looking fish, especially as juveniles.

I can't help but notice the acute (narrow) dorsal fin, or is it the photo?

Nice looking fish.

Yes, they look awesome. I wanted a duckweed control and after putting hte bullheads in, overnight, most of hte duckweed is gone.

how big is the dorsal supposed to be?? They have a pretty good sized adipose fin though.

Eating duckweed? That would be odd.

It's not the size of the fin, it's the shape that looks odd for a bullhead. Maybe just the angle.

it probably is just the angle. Those pictures were from last night when I dumped them out of their muddy bag into a bucket then putting them into a specimen container full of clean water.
