hey everyone! I have what I believe is a black/brown bullhead, really beautiful and nearly 18" long. Unfortunately he is ~7 years old so probably towards the end of his lifespan, but I want to make whatever time he has left as comfortable as possible.
I moved him earlier this year to his new tank, not sure how many gallons but it's very large. It's more like a kiddie pool than a tank, honestly, just much taller on the sides. His old tank was much too small (not sure the exact dimensions, but it couldn't have been more than 75 gallons). So far, his new tank is bare-bottom with no decorations as I couldn't find any hides large enough. Bare-bottom makes it much easier to clean, and prevents substrate from being sucked into the filter intake, which is near the bottom. However, I was thinking about adding in some substrate to make it more like his natural environment (he was caught in the wild as a baby).
I found a large hide meant for koi I was thinking about getting for him, but I want to avoid driftwood because he is mostly blind and rubs up against everything. He has injured himself a few times before on sharp edges. If anyone's kept bullheads or other similar fish before, do you have any tips for keeping him happy? what would be the best sand to buy, and how would I keep it clean considering he freaks out if he bumps into something (like a siphon) in the water and the filter intake is near the bottom? right now, waste on the bottom is sucked up into the internal or external filters, which I can clean out without disturbing him. any help is appreciated, thanks!

In addition to cleaner water (more water changes, plants to suck up nitrates), I'd increase aeration. I moved my elderly yellow bullhead from his own 180g tank to a 40B that is basically the sump of a 200+ gallon system. His tank has a ton of water flowing into it at all times as well as a ton of pothos... and daily water changes to the whole system. He really doesn't cruise around as much as when he was younger... so it works well for him.

I have him in a 200g with a custom-built external filter system (not sure how many gallons it adds). Filtration is very good and I put in air stones for better dissolved oxygen. He seems to likehis new tank and is always swimming around and exploring. Unfortunately I am concerned because it appears he might be ignoring food so idk if he's sick. He's also turning a more mottled black and white color which I thought was just him aging but now I'm worried it might be something else... I posted on the health issues forum, hopefully he will be ok :nilly:

My prior bullhead lived for 7 or 8 years and slowly stopped eating and then got light colored and died. Was about 13-14". No explanation really.

My current one is I think 6 years old and going strong. He's about 11 inches and eats like a horse.

I've never had a bullhead for more than a couple of years before moving them on, but I would have guessed that they would have fairly long lifespans. Surprisingly, a bit of searching seems to indicate that the average life-span is in the 5 - 10 year range, with a few exceptional specimens making it to the 15-year mark.

So perhaps both instances described above, by OP and D dogofwar , are simply old fish approaching the natural end of their lives?
