Bullheads anyone

I have 3 marble bullheads in my pond with the koi fishes. They look much better than the muddy yellow ones. I got them from the local fish store when they were only 2". They don't get too big like the channel cats.

Marble is that the same as spotted bullhead, I have a yellow he's still small 3"-4" but very interesting fish to watch

No. Marbled bullheads are Ameiurus nebulosus, spotted bullheads are Ameiurus serracanthus.

The marbled bullhead when referenced properly is a fish that is sometimes called Ameiurus nebulosus marmoratus, a subspecies from the FL/GA line area. The normal brownies with some mottling are not the same thing (though of course local names vary wildly from place to place).

This is a marbled bullhead:

whoa, never saw that subspecies before. Do they attain the same size that browns do?

Yes. The Florida fish and game says a "big catch" for these is I believe 18" and 2 pounds. They're not monsters like blues or flat heads, but they can get to a decent size. I imagine in an aquarium they would likely stay around a foot. I'm going to attempt to acquire one of these this spring.

I am keeping two bullheads right now. One is yellow and another is a black (shortbodied) both are super hardy and not super fussy when it comes to the foods. The shortbodied black is already adult when I capture him in the wild so he is 8" and the yellow is just a baby that I found in the bait shop. Both are in a 55gal for now.

People keep bullheads. Type "bullhead" in the search and you will get plenty of threads, photos, info. Go to "Catfish" forum. You will see to the right "Page 1 of 221" etc. Under it there is the "Search forum" button.
