Lake Erie
I am going to brave the cold and try and catch some burbot in the next few days. Anyone ever fish for these? They are in close to shore this time of year so I am going to give it a shot. I was just going to do a crappie rig with either chubs or big minnows. Which ever bait I can find.
Any tips??? I have never caught or fished for them.
It is going to be real cold on the lakefront I already know...but if I hook it up it will be well worth it!

Have caught a few of these through the ice. Using a tip-up at night and close to shore. We use dead bait, either shiners, smelt, or suckers, laying right on the bottom. Helps too to cut the bait open to spread the scent easier. They seem to prefer gravel/cobble bottom.

Be careful on the ice though (if you have any). There have been a few idiots go through the ice here already.

Ive caught them on accident before during the fall, I caught mine on a spawn sack....

go shallow and at low light...even though they are more active in the day this time of year due to their spawning now...i have not caught one yet, but my friends catch them like they are going out of style in 20ft average...they are going for walleyes:screwy:.....what a waste of time....when i go with them i go for pouts with a bye-catch of walleyes an i've yet to catch the fish i go for...:nilly:
