So about a week ago i noticed my pickerel hanging out around my heater in my 75 gal, later that night it looked like he may have burned himself because of the mark and where he was by the heater. Once i got my Wolf fish i moved my pickerel to a 20 gallon that had a heater for my bichirs, then he burned himself again almost in the same spot. I am 100% sure he has been getting too close to the heaters. Now i have put him in his own 20 gallon alone with out a heater so he can heal and i wont be putting him with a heater again. So without adding salt what is there that i can do to help my pickerel heal?

Also I don't want to use salt with my pickerel because in the past just the small amount in the tank with my old one killed him. And i know pickerel dont need a heater it just ended up that he was in a tank with other fish that needed it.

You can do a topical treatment of iodine solution. Use a Q-tip when doing so and be very careful not to leak the iodine into its eyes, mouth and gills. After that, use a soft towel to dry the sore a bit and apply Neosporin on it. Cream is better. You may use Biobandage in the absence of Neosporin. Iodine is for one time use only as it can remove the healing tissues if repeated. Do daily water changes afterwards and don't worry about iodine leaking into the water if it does. The concentration is far too low to intoxicate the fish.
