I rearranged my tank a little recently and now my ABK is acting strange. I moved my tank around a little, displacing my pleco. The pleco has taken up residency in the seashell the knife usually hangs out in. The knife now hangs out just outside the shell. I also put black sand in the bottom. The knife spends the night brushing his side on the bottom and he digs a big hole in the sand. I went to bed last night with the sand even and level on the bottom. I woke up to a spot of bare glass in the front of the tank and a 7" tall pile of sand in the back. Does anyone else see their knife doing this? Is my knife possibly sick and trying to brush its side? I don't see any lesions or irritations on its side. Does it have anything to do with being displaced from his home by the pleco? Or do knives like to brush sand around?

Do you have any other hiding spots besides the shell?

There's no ich. There's an upturned clay pot in the tank with a little opening cut in it. It's a little small for him though. He just hangs out in from of the seashell (almost inside of it he's so close). He only digs at night though. In fact, since I made the first post, he has dug another hole nearly the same size already!

I would try to rearrange the tank to give it some more hiding spots.

Ok..... I rearranged the tank and the knife now has a place to hide. Here's the problem: my ABK and my pleco both appear to be digging in the same spot. Can anyone think of something that might possibly grow beneath the substrate that fish would rummage for? Could my fish be getting to that age where they become territorial? My pleco is 7"+ and the ABK is around 6" (give or take). Could they just be fooling around? The spot they dig is the only spot in my tank that has no plants or decor; are they just playing around?

My pleco rushed into the seashell that the ABK was hiding in and forced the knife out. The knife is swimming around furiously and rubbing its side on things around the tank, such as an upturned clay pot, the seashell, driftwood and that big spot in the tank on the sand. It also appears to have some scratches on its side. Anyone ever seen this?

I think I've deduced the problem. My pleco has gotten territorial. I kicked him out of by big tank and moved him to my "small" tank. The knife has completely stopped digging and rubbing. He's happily floating around as usual.
