shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I heard some people have had fish tanks burst open all of a sudden. Has anyone had this experience and is there any way to detect it before it happens? How much water damage could a 55g do on the second story of a house?

im not sure how to detect it but a 55 could do literally thousands of dollars damage

Lets put it this way, I got a call from the wife, she was screaming for me to get home. And she never, ever screams. I was close so I shot home. About one foot of the bottom of my 55g had let loose and was cascading all over the floor. The floor was covered in buckets and towels and the tank had lost about half its water at that point. I emptied the rest of the water as fast as I could. Had th sell the fish because I was mono-tanked back then. The carpet and pad were gonners but, we found we had beautiful hardwood floors underneath that luckily did not warp. I guess the main disaster was having to sell some fish I had for more than 5 years. And it could have been a lot worse if no one was home to catch it. Still chuckle about my wife freaking out!

I have not had a tank burst. That's all I have to say.
I don't want to jinx it.
This thread makes my stomach turn.....

Oh yeah, that tank was like 20 years old too. But, it was on a dresser. Age or bad placement or both?

Why did the water ruin your carpet?
The carpet and pad were gonners
I once had a water heater burst my carpet got drenched but it dried out fine. This thread is no fun i just moved my 55 out of my garage and into my living room. I was going to fill it tonight but i am going to wait now.

prettymuch... all depends on whats on the floor and how sealed the floor is (tile vs carpet)... if yer worried about it... get insurance

I read someone on here talking about an acrylic tank bursting while filling it up. The culprit was bad shipment.

Another thing a lot of people dont know about is, yeah, tempered glass is really REALLY strong, I mean you can swing up and throw a hammer at it and it wont break. But you can tape the thin edge of tempered glass with the slightest amount of force and it will shatter.

Im gonna ask the obvious, and probably the only part of your wife's "freaking out" that you cared about: What fish were in the tank/did they survive?
