I am about to buy ten frontosas from somethingfishy on aquabid. i was wondering are there any differences between the two kinds besides the kigomas having seven bars.

any help would be great gonna order them on friday

thanks,

Yes there are the kigoma is the only true frontosa I believe the burundi is a gbberosa and I think the kigomas grow a little bigger and they live in seperate parts of the lake. If you purchase both kinds a nd cross them you will have basicaly worthless hybrids and they may not even cross also the burundis have some blue coloring where as the kigomas are black and white hope this helps.

Sf would be me :)
Gerber what ever soso it is really has not taken ahold in the trade as a new genera/group.
Anyway the Burundi 6 bar & Kigoma 7 bar are basically the same body shape with a large hump, more slender body as appose to zambian & zaire strains. Colors are simular but the kigoma maybe a little lighter in color with a hint of gold upper area of body. The male stud burundi has more blue in the face. They are both great fish. Both Males are around 12" in size.
I also have Zaire Kapampa, Zaire Kitumba, Zaire Tembwe(spelling?), Nangu, Samazi, Ikola, Bulu point & I think that is it but a have a bunch. My personal favorite.
Mr wild Bill I will take some pics of the young shortly & email them to this evening.

There was a post on that here you should be able to find it in the search colum on the side it gave me a lot of info.

From what I understand the Burundi's, like the Kigoma's, originate from the northern portion of the lake and aren't Gibberosa's (Burundi's, Kavala's, Karilani's are the Northern species). The Gibberosa variants are found in the southern portions of the lake.

Based on my observations, the Kigoma variant as a somewhat elongated body form when compared to the burundi. Also the Kigoma doesn't have an eye stripe. The first 'bar' takes the form of a 'cheek blotch' found below the eye, with little or no barring above the eye. Burundi's tend to have a pronounced near-vertical stripe which extends both above and below the eye.
