Hey guys,
I bought a small bushy nose pleco about 2 months ago, i was wondering when do they start to get the "bushy nose", also he has barely grown in the 2 months i have had him, when i bought him he was probably about 3/4 of an inch and now he might be an inch, is this normal, is he malnourished, i have a 2 inch common pleco with him if it helps?

Bristlenose plecos don't get all that big to begin with, so they grow at a fairly slow rate. I've been keeping a few for a few months now and notice only a slight change in growth. Mine were mostly bought at the 1.5-2" range. So far two are showing bristles and they happen to be among the 3-4 of the biggest that I have (out of 6). So, I would say that about 1.5-2" is when you should begin to see the tiny bristles begin to protrude (esp. if male). Again, that's in my experience. Enjoy these active little buggers!

perhaps u had gotten a female...that would explain the lack of a....bushy nose...lol

i know about the bristles not growing, if its a female but i was moreso concerned about the overall growth of him. but thanks i have noticed slight growth, hopefully i will see more soon, as for diet he eats whatever falls to the bottom, lol. mostly fish flakes, freeze dried white shimp, and bloodworms

I have a bushynose in my 300g and he's topped out at about 5". It took for him get about 3" before I really started to notice the bristles. I have another one in a 20g that's about 2" and I can barely see his bristles. If you don't have enough algae in the tank for him to eat, try some algae wafers. My common pleco and bushynoses thrive on them! Bushynoses have a much slower growth rate than common plecos.

cool i was really hoping they had a slow growth rate! other wise i was really worried for his health, but i think i will invest in some algae tablets
