so last night at 1am my 135 gallon tank decided that it wanted to commit suicuide and i herd a loud pop and after that a moment of silence and rushing of water after
i got up out of bed to see that 20 to 40 gallons drained out the tank with fish in tank ( oscar -2 sevrums-fire eel-pleco) looking like WTF!!!!
i began draining the rest of water as fast as i could out the window!!! thinking the the crack in the tank was going to bust open and everyone was going to come flying free onto the floor.
DONt want that so i wanted to relieve the pressure as fast as i could.
long story short
drainded tank
house flooded with about 50 gallons
all fish moved into tub
moved
heater
fx5
bubbler
in there with them
went well
rentured tank today because was under 5 year warenty! should get a replacment by wednesday!!
for now everyone was placed in a 60 gallon tank
with FX5 and AC110 in there
which looks funny WAY OVER FILTERED!!!

MY QUESTION VERY IMPORTANT
how does a tank go about busting like that out of no were
i no it happenes but just never thought it would happen to me you no!
lady at store said somthing about if tank cracked from middle of tank down it ment something and if it cracked from almost middle but more on side down it ment something eles?
dont no if this makes sence to any of you but ya????
the tank was level as i could get it
the stand was a DIY
was just a hair off but nothing extreme
water was leaning more on front side of tank by just a hair you could not even tell untill you filled up all the way to the top and you could see it hit the cross member from the front first then slowly as you filled it would reach the back.
sence water was leaning more on front panel you would think that would crack no? but the back panel is what crack???
any ideas
any thoughts would help!!!!
when i say it was leaning more tords front by just a hair i really mean just a hair
it wasnt extreme at all??

Sounds to me that the panel that busted had imperfections in the glass itself that allowed it too not be able to support the water pressure longterm.

Sorry to hear about the accident, thank god I have alway wanted to buy an acryllic tank, its the best, I hate glass tank, they are heavy, dangerous in case of an earthquake, prone to cracking, leakage, shatter, and silicone seal need to be check and replace in the long run. Acryllic tank on the other hand are much lighter easier to move, less likely to crack, shatter, or leaks, the ONLY negative thing about the acryllic tank is that is EASY to get scratch and kinda expensive.

I don't like acryllic at all. I had lot of problem with them. I had a 150 gal that I use for SW which did not last long. All scratch up after jus 1 year. And my 180 gal FW tanks didn't do to well either, I put too much stress on it when I make a massive water change. after a while it bulg out in the middle and the joint split.
But it was really easy to get in and out of the house.
ANOTHER GLASS FOR ME PLEASE

Sorry about the mess.

Do you have any pics of the broken tank?
What do you mean by the stand is off a hair?
If the stand is twisted it could have caused the failure by twisting the tank.

A little off level is not a problem, but you should try to get it perfect by shimming under the stand between the floor.
The top of the stand should be smooth, level and have no protrusions.
For minor imperfections use 3/4" styrofoam insulation board between the tank and stand. This by no means will level the tank, but will make up for the minor imperfections.

I wouldn't mention your homemade stand, they may not warranty the tank.

ouch, not what you need at 1am.

sounds like an imperfection in the glass imo.
must admit its my worst nightmare. ive actually had the dream more than once. and have to get up and check afterwards!!

bet you were thinking why 1am!!! why not a more reasonable hour at least lol.

good luck getting it sorted.

kawamikie's advice is what id recomend for the replacement though. and yeah dont mention the stand being DIY. you know what some companys are like with warranty.

hey guys ya im thinking an imperfection
sucks though
has anyone eles had a freak accident like this happen to them?
were can i get 3/4 styrofoam at?

Try going to home depo, lowes or where ever and asking for foam insulation board. It comes in 4'x8' sheet's kinda cheap. Sorry about the mishap. Good luck.
