im in louisiana and i was at my LFS and they have a 10 inch male who is BAD ASS and very nice looking. so on the tank its the whole "NFS" (not for sale) and he said there ilegal to sell....

whats up there really ilegal down here? i never knew that

they are illegal, as are all tilapia in louisiana and also in many other states.

don't know exactly why but there's always a good reason.

i heard something about tilapia invading warm waters somewhere i think? but not sure. its probably illegal like how p's are illegal in most states

True this therory works for a good number of fish. but look at maine- all piranha are illegal in maine. they'd have a hard time surviving maines summer water temps, let alone maine winter water temps. hard subject.

Many Tilapia are able to withstand cool temps other cichlids can't. I have been able to keep Tilapia niloticus here in Milwaukee, outside in a pond, May-Oct, whereas other cichlids barely make it thru July and Aug.
They are also so prolific (and in the case of buttis so aggressive)they could edge out native species, and wreck havoc on the aquatic environment.
If something ever gets too big for your tank, and your tempted to release it, eat it instead.

NFS at fish stores really means "hard to barter for". They can't sell it, but they can "give" them away.

Butti are illegal to sell in V.A. and have been for over a decade to my knowledge however i have seen them for sale at several lfs in my area labled as jailbird,convict, or another false i.d. The folks at the lfs don't seem worried about it i guess not many people know the differances when i asked the lfs they just say the supplier sent the wrong thing whoops haha how many would u like ? I say 2 and the day goes on
