Not a good choice, buttikoferi get big and nasty. Even at a small size it will push the oscar around. Oscars are way to docile to be in with a buttikoferi. The only way I would do it is if the tank is packed with other cichlids so agressine is spread out. Also the buttikoferi will get twice as big as the oscar.
No way! meybe if your oscar is a full 12-14 inches and the butti is like 4 inches or under.
the buttis are way to mean. My 6inch butti was the tinyest guy in my tank probably at 1inch while all the devils and flowers were already at 4-6 inches and he pretty much out grew every body and killed everybody hes out grown and some that are bigger.
hes put down: mayan, red terror, 3 gts a 1 of my red devils and like three flowerhorns, he also used to beat on my gold flowerhorn but i moved him out before it was to late. he beat on my male dempsey and killed it that was meybe 9 inches, and he always nearly kills my smaller jag but then the jag find a hiding spot the butti can get to. these fish were all pretty fast swimmers to keep away, some even fought back. tlike the devil he killed, it fought back and the butti lost a couple times but it seemed like every time he lost 30 mins later hed go scrap again and eventually the devil gave up got chased and was killed. the buttis have a big will to be dominant.
OSCARS HAVE NO WILL TO FIGHT AND WHEN THEY DO ALL THEY DO IS OPEN THERE BIG MOUTH AND TURN SIDE WAYS, TO TRY AND INTIMINATE. THEY ARE TO SLOW AND WILL NOT OUT RUN AND THEYRE TO BIG AND SLOPPY TO HIDE!!!!!!
BOTTOM LINE NO OSCER WITH BUTTI
KYLE
I agree that it is a really bad combination. an lfs in indy has a 300 gallon display tank that always holds several large cichlids. one time a while back it had a 12"+ butti, a 10+" albino oscar plus several others. the butti relentlessly chased around the oscar. I don't know what happened to them but the whole time I was there that day the butti would not leave the oscar alone. I know that doesn't mean that every butti will chase every oscar, but the point is as the others have said a large oscar is no match for a large butti. if the butti decides it doesn't want the oscar around, it won't take long for him/her to get rid of the oscar.
my butti is kinda lame. hes like terrified of me or something. everytime i get near the tank he just disappears. its kinda strange how they say hes a mean fish when he acts the way he does around me.
but i guess imma have to get rid of the butti, send his butt to the LFS then put in an oscar instead.
I think that butti's are more aggressove as they grow larger. The oscar is more docile and is likely to be beaten on, especially if there is not a lot of room for them. Both those fish get pretty large.
i wouldn't recommend it, butti's are super nasty, some O's are too, but they don't got the teeth that the butti's do. my butti beat up on pretty much everything of any size, except a plec that was twice his size.
