recent a buttikoferi was miss sold to me and was wondering if it would be ok with my fish as they got older

I have:

Saddle cichlid
synspilium
2 x peacock cichlid
jack dempsey
5 bar african
2 X living stonii
1 plec
and a synodontis catfish

they are all the same size expect the saddle cichlid and the jack which are about 5" and not considering tank size just compatibility.

I know you said you're looking for terms of compatability disregarding tank size. But with aggressive fish like this it plays a huge role.

Potentially yes they could all live together, but anything under 240g you're asking for trouble IMO.

Also, IMO, when people hide their tank size, they know it isn't big enough. Not saying yours isn't, but thats what i've experienced on here...

As Grant said, tank size is crucial for groups of cichlids to get along. Especially when dealing with Buttikoferi. However there is a lot to be said about the temperament of the individual fish. Generally Buttas are real turds and are crazy aggressive and territorial. If you have a large tank try it out for awhile but have a place for him to go if he becomes to much of a brute.

butterrkoferi can get NASTY , in addition to getting huge.. i think there growth rate is much faster than tradition africans

I gotta ask, not to be a jerk, but why you mixing south americans and central americans with africans anyways,

they are both cichlids but its like completely different water parameters, aggeresion, etc etc, ,go buy another tank and split the 2 worlds up, then youd be more likely to achieve longterm success
my 2 cents...

I have africans and americans in the same tank, and natives and others as well and they're all absolutely perfectly fine. :)

Same thing happened to me. A dumb fish store attendant sold my younger brother a few juvenile african cichlids for our 55 gallon tank. Little did he know he included a baby butti in the mix. We have had it for about 7 months and it is around 6inches, we bought it at 1inch. It has actually lived very peacefully with all the fish but I am concerned that one day it will turn evil and kill all it's tank mates. I guess time will tell but he is a good looking fish and seems to be to slow/uninterested to attack the other cichlids.
