Buttikoferi tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In my opinion, chances of tankmates surviving with a big Butti in a 125 are slim. Butti's are one of the nastiest cichlids in my experience. Kept a similarly sized one years ago that needed to be alone until I sold it, would attack my arm during cleaning. Seemed more aggressive than just about any other large cichlid I've kept. Of course, each fish may be different.
A 125 is probably bare-bones minimum tank size for a butti, as they hypothetically get over a foot and a half in length. I would just let it have the tank alone.

Thanks for the advice

I have a 5" butt-head in a 150g. he was in my 240g with others since he was 1.5" a jd, firemouth, starry night, a hrp and 3 juruparis. he beat every one up when he got to be about 4". the firemouth didn't survive the experience. he's now a wet pet and I'm really tempted to rehome him so I can have my 150g back lol. good luck with what you decide to try if anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if elephant poop would also work, so going to your local zoo, and offering to relieve them of a little might be a welcome change......maybe....wonder what the demand is?
Then again the tank might create an odiferous need for many Glade units and off set the savings of free food.
