ok so ive had my butti about 3 years and just recently noticed he broke his heater. he breaks everything so that didnt suprise me, what does suprise me is the tank is and has been running at about 60-65 degrees MAX for some time now (no idea how long) and overall he seems to be very healthy. he still smashes glass anytime someone comes in "his room" and moves mountains of gravel all day n night. he is eating well and all in all havent noticed a change.

how important is temp? ya i know about temp and metabolism, but i promise a 20 degree drop hasnt slowed him at all. long term healt issues? he is a monster n breaks everything in his tank, i was suprised to see the last heater made it almost a year and rather not bother finding another "unbreakable" heater for him to break.

I'm sure the temp in their native waters change with the seasons, but I would rather have a heater on the tank just in case the ambient temp drops below 60-65 for any reason. If you have a canister filter on the tank, try a inline heater.

all good ways to heat the water but doesnt adress the question, is it unhealthy for a butti to be in colder water? if it is bad what can happen? still no heater and he still seems fine.

There are feral populations that have become established in southern Florida, so I would assume temps in the mid 60s are well tolerated. But they are indigenous to western Africa, which is tropical.
I kept a few in a pond in Milwaukee during the summer that did very well, in temps that ranged from the 60s to the 90s.
There are heaters built with a sort of cage around them, if the in-line heater is not your thing.
I have a fluval series E, where the tube is encased in a plastic cage, it somewhat masks the indicator light, which at times prompts a fish to attack the heater.
