I am gonna go to the store and buy a Jack dempsey cichlid....i wanna make sure that i get a male...what should i look for mainly to make sure that i get a male JD?

Males usually have less blue splotches on the gill cover, but it can be really hard to tell. I've attached a pic of my male, hope that helps.

I recommend going to PETCO for JD... only 3.26 ea!

its a killer price.. I got almost all of my JD from there..

sometimes u'll get lucky and get 2-3 inches for the same price.. other times its about 1 to 1.5 in

but its the best prices all around for JD..

Here is my male. If you want a male get one that has absolutly no coloration on the gill plate like mine...

I have been trying to get a male for ages now as well, I THINK I finally got one but I am not entirely sure.

What I've been told is like what others have said about the colours on the gill plate. But I was wondering if anyone knows other things beside that? Like some of mine have a dark spot on the body while others its more a stripe.

Also, can a male be quite pale?

Hard to differentiate when young, but as the other poster advised. The larger more boisterous fish in the group is more than likely a male.
