Most of my fish I've raised from fry. I'm considering buying a fullgrown blackbelt cichlid. I haven't pulled the trigger yet because I'm worried that I wont have the same connection with the blackbelt as I do with the fish that I've raised. Has anybody else had this worry?

I used to feel the same way but now I have to buy atleast sub adult fish so the monsters I already have wont eat it..

Sometimes its better to buy an adult specimen to know what you have as far as personality, color, temperment, ect.. Which is another reason I buy sub-adult fish now.. If the black belt is pretty and active, and wont cause problems with your current stock, id say get it!!

I don't have that worry....don't think I ever have.Any connections I might have with my fish are based on how the particular fish handles itself in the tank...I seem to have better luck starting with adults rather than babies also.

I hate buying small fish and growing them up lol. I think adults are better as above states you know what you will end up with.

I do enjoy buying fish more @ teenage and growing them a little. I think one of the best advantages is you will know if the fish is a meanie or a nice guy. which is good for blackbelts some can be real bullies others wont kill a guppy.

I used to love raising fry and watching them grow....which I guess I still do. However, after losing a few tanks full of fish that I had raised from fry and were just getting to be sub adults and coming into their own (October snow storm a few years ago), I have no problem now buying an adult or sub-adult! I haven't noticed that I feel any differently about them! I say go for it if it is a fit for your tank!

Ive been in your shoes. If its a fish you really want and like youll get attache the same. If its a fish someone is just pawning off on you and you could careless about owning it or not maybe not.

I would go with sub-adults, get a group to grow out and pick the one you like. Maybe around the 4inch range. A reliable seller should be able to vent them at that size. Fish are cheaper and smaller fish are easier to ship. Some vieja/paraneetroplus grow unbelievably slow(breidhori & heterospilus) but I think blackbelts are pretty quick growing( I read this on here i think, IDK). You should get a big fish soon enough.

I've always preferred to buy juveniles and grow them out but if there's a real monster available, that I can house properly I'd be all over it. Especially an adult Black Belt. I say go for it.
