My question is do you prefer to buy baby fish and raise them yourself or do you prefer to buy the juvenile or adults
ones? So far my first 2 monsters are young adults. I rescued 2 iridescent sharks from my LFS. They were relinquished bc the previous owner under estimated their size potential. Currently The Boss is between 12"-13" and Brutus is between 10"-11". Now I have my eyes set on an Arrowana. My LFS has one for sale and it's a good 2' long. But I can't decide if I should splurge and get this monster or if I should wait to get a baby one. Any thoughts or inputs on this? Thanks - Amber

I have very few fish that are bred in captivity so I get very few babies. I live in a city that is lacking in good fish stores so all of my fish are bought online. I would buy adults but they don't ship well. I buy the biggest I feel will ship.

I prefer to get my fish as young as possible - I like watching them grow :)

If I kept delicate species I'd probably feel differently, but pretty much everything I like to keep is about as hard to kill as a cockroach.

I prefer getting them really small and growing them up, partly because I like watching them grow and also they are unlikely to be stunted or to have been in bad conditions for very long

It really depends on the availability to me. I like growing juveniles that I have easier access to, easier to raise and cheaper as well (for example, aros and some pbass). Why spend $150+ on an adult fish when you can buy for 1/4 to 1/3 the price and grow him up to an adult size in 18 months.
On the other hand, I would tend to buy adult fishes that grow slowly (i.e. Datnoids) if the price is right.

Also if an adult fish that I really want is available for a good deal that I can't pass on, I would snag it. (Bought a 15' jardini a few years back for $80) It hasn't happened to me often though.

I prefer to get them large because they usually have better colours and I prefer to simply watch a big fish in my tank but the only problem is that big fish are more expensive

I raised my fish from juveniles to adults 98% of the time. A few times I bought adult fish but regret. IMO, the most expensive fish should not be adult fish, but maturing juveniles or subadults. Raising fish from juveniles or subadults ensure that the fish will blossom in front of your eyes, instead of a decline if you purchase adult fish that has passed the peak.

I always go the grow out route. It doesn't bother me much if they're slow growers, I just really enjoy watching them thrive and go through their changes. There is definitely a sense of pride to being able to raise babies to adulthood.
