i was reading my pet solutions catalog and i saw things that claim to be bb in a jar. is it truly bb? is there any point in trying it out?:nilly::nilly:

forevery one that doesnt know what bb is.
what is bb?

you meanlike bio-spira?
that stuff worked for me. they also make it in marine 'style'

I like to call BB(who calls it that?) Nitrifying bacteria, because that is what it is.

This depends on the product. I know when stored right BIO-SPIRA works great, but things like 'Cycle' and anything that does not need to be refrigerated will likely not work.

If you are not trying to set up a new tank or you are trying to jump start the cycle, there is really no reason to use these products.

i read sumwhere that this stuff isnt tested, and who knows if this stuff even truly works.

Bio-spira has worked well for me numerous times, on numerous tanks, for numerous customers.

Sol's bactinettes are largely considered to be quite effective as is Tetra Safestart. They are both supposed to contain the correct bacteria to do the process.

However, when Practical Fish Keeping magazine tested Safestart to cycle an aquarium they found that the fish were "still exposed to dangerous levels of nitrite" though it did speed up the cycle.

I've used Hagen's Cycle to 'repair' a canister filter I accidentally pumped 10 gallons of chlorinated water through. (couldn't find any safestart at the time)

Of course there was no knowing what the degree of the damage was but after using Hagen's Cycle I observed no nitrite whatsoever. Of course this was in an established tank.

Oh, I thought it was Beautiful Butt in a jar. I was going to order some today for my wife.
I use "seeded" water, filter and substraight, from established tanks. I guess that is not always an option if it is a spur of the moment, impulse tank, where you had not set up the new filter in an old tank for a couple of weeks ahead of time.
