i like to try to be at my LFS on his delivery day so i can get first pick...is this smart??? should i wait a few days before buying the LFS newly aquired fish??? i was thinking if i get there and he has just got them and put them in a tank and then i buy it and its gotta be bagged up and travel again that that has got to be stressful as hell on the fish. am i right to think this?
I really don't think its that big a deal. I would get my choice of the litter if i had the opportunity. Chances are your lfs will get juvie fish and they should be okay in a bag for longer periods of time than adults. Gl though
it's less stressful on the fish in my opinion as people are going to be walking by all day... annoying kids tapping on glasses.... being put in a same tank as other fish that would be competing for the good spot.....
versus having you take it rightaway and put it in a hospital tank in a quiet place... sooner its done the better on the fish
thats just my opinion
btw the water quality in your tank is more likely to be better than the LFS....
Go in put a deposit on what you want then pick it up the next day.
Thats how I do it in my stores.
Some fish are in bags/boxes for up to 3-4 days! They need to settle in. some fish are hardy then there is some that are not.
I will sell that day they come in but zero guarantee!
If it is a well run shop on a non central system they are better off there for a day & if something goes down then it can be tackled asap.
@OP: I do the same thing and have never had a problem, the fish seem to do better because they are then only acclimated once instead of going through the stress of being landed into a lfs tank only to be chased with a net, rebagged, and re-acclimated shortly after. Just make sure it appears healthy and put it in a quarantine tank first.
My LFS usually has a 1 week quarantine before they sell any of the fish they get in. Best that you do that. Put yours into a quarantine tank to make sure they are okay before you taint your tank unknowingly
What I meant was that I get there when the fish get there and sometimes pick a fish before it is out of the transport bag and take before it is even out of that bag. If it is already in the tank I'd hold off and let the fish have a chance to rest for a week or so, just ask them to hold it or you.
