What's a fair price for a pair of 7"-8" discus that are laying eggs in the lfs tank?

They're a pidgeon and blue checker board.

How hard is it to have multiple pairs in the same tank? Or would they be better off each in a smaller tank?

Hard to say chances are if they are that big there pretty old my lfs has a tank he was trying to get some to pair off and there about 4.5 5 inches and 1.5 years old

I think the price can vary based on a lot of factors. The breeding pair you mentioned is not a "matching" pair so, in my mind, they aren't worth as much. I have seen a mating pair go anywhere from $200 up to $1,000. It really depends on what it is worth to you. I think that the bottom dollar for fish like that is probably around $200-250.

As for keeping multiple breeding pairs in the same tank, all the research I have done (I don't have any yet so no actual experience) says that the breeding pair should be separated from other fish. It is actually better to keep them in a slightly smaller tank (I see 30 gallons recommended a lot) so that the fry can easily find their parents, since they start off feeding from their parents' slimecoats. If you keep any pair in with other fish, even other discus then you run the risk of either the other fish eating the eggs or fry, or the parents getting spooked and eating their own eggs or fry. Even in their own tank the parents can get spooked and eat their own eggs or fry.

They're locally bred and raised. The lfs guy buys most of his stuff from local guy and auctions.

Makes sense about how they're not a matching pair and the price should warrent that. They're listed at $325 a pair and he has three pairs for grabs. I'm probably going to get at least two pairs and put one in a 4fter and the other in either a 29 of 40b then.

Thanks.

Are you planning on breeding them to sell?
More of a hobby. I'll probably sell them back to the lfs and at local auctions. I don't really care about the money.
