I have always bought my fish in groups of 6-8 to get a pair, but I have really lost interest in breeding at the moment but would like to keep single specimens. I was wondering those of you who have some experience could tell me if there is anyway to increase the odds of getting a male when they are small? I was thinking of buying the biggest fish in the tank? I know there are no ways of knowing for sure I was just thinking maybe some of you have noticed. i.e when biggest or most aggressive was bought 6/10 times it turned out to be a male. I hope this makes sense anything would be great.

i think you just about answered your question yourself... ;) :headbang2

It all depends on which fish. Some can be discerned, most can not. If you want to be sure to buy a male adult fish are the way to go. If the gender does not matter, then buy one of anything. And Besides males with big humps ,what is the draw toward male fish? Females are the prettier of the two as often as the males are. They do all the same stuff. Mixing males and females does get crazy at times. I used to think I wanted all males until I discovered pikes!

Well with pikes, generally a lot of the females are much prettier than the male. Kind of liek the festae? Female is more sought after (It seems but I like the male just as much).

As for how to determine sexes well it all depends on the fish. Ask specific fish names because people can help with that. Recently I wanted to know how to determine sexes with sajicas and fishfreak showed me juvies and how to tell the difference.

Fish like Salvini are easy to tell even at small sizes. Look for the dark patch in the middle of the dorsal fin....Just an example (BTW salvini females are awesome)

Anyway...what size tank? Any species that have caught your eye yet?

thanks. well I am buying a 125 for myself for christmas but I dont know what to put in it. I like motaguense but from what I read I think they get too aggressive. how about the female festea are they really aggressive anyway of telling a female of those at a very young age? an Lfs near me had some juvies last time i was there.
