Hi,

I recently bought a 2 and half inch hujeta. I've been reading some stuff on the internet and a lot of it says they have to be fed live foods. I dont want to give it feeders tho. has anyone had any experience with getting them off live foods? What did u end up feeding it. I'm going to starve it and see whats up... Any feedback apperciated

I gave my hujeta only frozen food, like bloodworms, mysis etc. ( even though it ate some of its smaller tankmates). I almost never fed with feeders.

I';ve had a few hujetas, they all ate pellets, bloodworm, beefheart, prawns etc.

Acestros are impossible to get off live food, I think it's a myth with hujetas.

Hujetas will adapt though some are stubborn, since yours is 2 1/2 " long just use 1/4" crickets and small floating carnivore pellets. Sprinkele some pellets itogether in the tank were you have a little surface movement the sprinkle a few crickets among the food, the fish will usually eat some pellets with the crickets. Then start using fewer crickets each time until it is eating straight pellets. If it was captive bred it will probably take floating pellets and large flakes right away. They also take small earthworms.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm gonna go get some hikari carnivore pellets soon. And get some crickets as well. The guy at the store said that its only been eating fish. So it might take awhile for him to accept dry food. I've put him in my a grow out tank with 3 bleheri's and a couple of mollies that have been breeding. I'm pretty sure he's been eating a couple of the babies that the mollies have just released coz his belly is kinda bulging...

mines eating any frozen food which floats after quickly going through white clouds he went straight into bloob worm with out hesitation though shrimps and others need to be floated,I let the thawed out food sit for another hr to slightly dry it this helps.I've had a few nips when trying to float food.more of a shock as he's only 5.5".
All the best,
John.

What would help the hujetas to eat krill or pellets would be to get another fish in with him that eat them. Hujetas are so greedy that they will be stealing the food from their mouth in no time.
