I got this fish from a friend of mine cos i anted a tank mate for my bichirs, someone to eat the left over food that my bichirs usually leave behind he gladly gave it to me, but i forgat the name, I just remembered him telling me that it was an african cichlid...can anyone ID pls...:)

Pics are pretty blurry so I cant really tell but I ll just take a guess at nimbochromis venustus

Giraffe cichlid is just the common name for a venustus. Doesn't look like on though cause venustus ar more of a green and don't have that type of pattern, they have more solid markings.

IMO, yours looks nothing like a venustus. Yours is either a polystigma or a livingstoni, but it is hard to judge from the pic. But if I had to guess just by the total shape of the fish I would go with a polystigma, for the fact that a livingstoni has a much bigger head, and doesn't have a many markings as a polystigma, but a better pic would still help a lot.
 
Yeah, its definitely not a venustus. Either a livingstonii or a poly.
