Why do the central and south american cichlids seem to be more popular than the african cichlids?

Have you guys ever even kept africans? I've seen some pretty ridiculous/awesome personalities, especially in the julidochromis speicies.

I'd imagine it's because african cichlids prefer water that differs greatly form most peoples tap water, and you can't keep a lot of other species with them in that kind of water... unlike a lot of CA/SA (not discus, or extreme blackwater wild caught SA cichlids).

For the most part Apistogramma says it all! Water definitely does has a lot to do with it for me. My tap is almost perfect for SA cichlids. The first cichlid to really catch my eye and make me want to keep them was the GBR. It just expanded outward from there.

However Julidochromis are gorgeous fish that will be in my home someday!

I didn't think there was that much ditference in thewater as both ca's and most africans need hard water but most sa's need soft and in that case our tap water favors the ca's and africans I thought price may have a bigger factor in this. We have ca's and africans mixed in a few of our tanks and they all seem to have their own personallities in fact when our moba was in a mixed tank it was a much more out going fish than now that it is in a moba group.

africans on the most part are boring to me but there are some species i like ...but im more on the big pred type cichlids like the parachromis species from ca to me they are more interesting...
