I am in the process of setting up a 55 gal for my JD and would like to get some dithers to bring some action and color to the tank. I was thinking about some swordtails or tetras. The JD is small, maybe 3" at most, now but I dont want to get something that will become a meal. He has a Giant Danio in the 20 gal tank with him now but it will not be going into the 55.

I would like to stick with something from CA or even SA. Any ideas?
Oh and the other occupant will either be a Raphael Catfish or maybe a Pleco.

Some larger tetras would be good, such as congos or buenos aires. You could possibly do like 3 silver dollars in there too, but make sure they are just regular silver dollars and not red hooks, which get way bigger than the normal ones.

If you want CA I'd go with swordtails, the JD will probably pick off the babies but the adults ought to be fine.

I have the Buenos aires tetras with my Midas. They constantly are nipping each other and I find them quite annoying. I started with 7 and they were always schooling, now I'm down to 4 and they are very skittish and do not school well. (My Midas has had a few treats! No big deal to me because I found them on sale at Petco for $1.79 each.) If you do decide on these take into account they are going to need much smaller food than your JD.

I would lean toward the the silver dollars. They are a bit bigger and have more impact than the little tetras. Like gt1009 said at least 3 of the regular type not red hooks. They grow pretty quick and usually do quite well with cichlids.

I went with 6 Buenos Aires Tetras. It would have been nice to keep the tank CA but I did not find any nice Swordtails locally. I was worried that Silver Dollars would get too big in a group for the 55 gal with a JD.

I will let these fish cycle the tank and then bring home the JD from work. They are certainly an active group.

Silvers would have been fine in the 55, they only get to like 6". I agree with what Octo said.
