Taken from the California Department of Fish and Game Title 14, section 671:

(6) Class Elasmobranchiomorphi -Cartilaginous Fishes
(A) Family Carcharhinidae -Requiem Sharks: All species of genus Carcharhinus (Freshwater sharks) (D).
(B) Family Potamotrygonidae -River stingrays: All species (D). [FONT=Arial,Arial]

So all Rays in the Family Potamotrygonidae are strictly prohibited. I have known this for as long as I can remember.

But recently, while I was browsing the AquaScape website I saw a ray not in the Genus Potomotygon. The Florida Stingray, Dasyatis sabina. After further research, I have found that it is also not in the Family Potamotrygonidae. It is not perfectly adapted for FW but can live exclusively in it. A lot like the Bull Shark.

I know relatively little about rays but have extensive experience in fishkeeping in general. Any info/experience on/with this species?

Thanks .

Not really an unknown loophole. Dasyatid rays have been sought often by keepers in states with riverine ray bans.
The reasons they're not exceedingly popular are:

-normally drab in color.
-attain sizes too large for 'normal'-sized aquaria.
-require an intensive maintenance schedule since marine/brackish species take in huge amounts of water (must be well conditioned and nearly pure) and expel large amounts of urea in freshwater (up to 10 times their usual amounts when maintained in marine conditions).

you can also get asian fresh water rays (if you can special order them). they are Himantura species. there are actually a lot of them besides the giant ray
