I'm wanting to give CA / SA breeding a try, and was wanting suggestions. I have experience breeding Africans, but lets be real. If they are capable of humping one another, they will. They're not picky. I'm looking for something meeting this criteria:

Has to be fish that can stand nuetral water parameters, and will mate in nuetral water parameters. My tanks are on a closed circuit, so special treatment won't be an option.

I'd like for it to be fish that are at least in some sort of demand. I'd happily give away most of the offspring after culling, but I don't want them to all end up fish food because no one will take them. I don't know why I'd feel guilty about that, but I would.

Nothing too God awful expensive. I don't mind paying well for top quality pair - but $200 each for a nice SRT female for example is just out of my price range.

Lastly - I'd like for it to be something fun to breed! Nothing super easy, I'd like to make a project of this and have fun with it. That's how boring my life is after having children.

Thanks for any ideas SA / CA experts, I appreciate your help!

Well depending on which you wanted to use, in the 60 you could do Sajicas, cons, neets, Cutteri, dempseys, the 90 gives you a few more options red tiger motaguanese, lyonsi, Texas, Cuban tons of different awesome Sa/ca

You could use the 90 for Midas! Not petsmart midevils, but certifiable Midas. We need more responsible breeders to separate the two species again, and you could breed and cull for Midas that retain black markings, which a lot of us are looking for.

Half of what you suggested are easy... most of the rest are super easy...

Breed FESTAE!!! Never enough supply than the demand! I can't produce enough. Too many breeding pairs and not enough grow out tanks for fry. Top dollar bread and butter cichlids that people don't mind paying for.

I think lyonsi would fit the bill as a nice challenge to breed. I don't think they're too easy, you can do a pair in a 90, they're gorgeous, and an endangered species. Also, they can be had for much less than a king's ransom. I mean... that's about as good as it gets!
