ca/sa together

ive been hearing alot about not mixing sa and ca cichlids, and am wondering, what's the big deal? that's like cot keeping canadian and american natives in seperate tanks.

excludeing some speices from each area that must be kept alone such as umbee's from SA
and dovii from CA

most of the rest can be kept together without a problem, the water conditions for the fish is vertually the same, and without aggresion problem there shouldn't be a problem

Not necessarily. Many CA's live in water conditions that closer match those of Africans from the two smaller rift lakes and many of the basin lakes. Neutral to hard.

And though many popular SA's come from waters that are naturally soft, most have been tankbred for generations in water that did not replicate their native conditions and wouldn't mind either way. That goes for most commonly tankbred fish, SA/CA/African/Asian/whatever.

You can keep a strictly SA tank and a strictly CA tank in the same room but if both those tanks get water straight from the tap and stay that way...then there should be other factors like diet and temperament to keep them apart and not "the different water" argument.

oscars, severums and green terrors usually do well with MOST central americans. atleast the semi-agressive ones like convicts, dempseys, firemouths, texas, etc.

i have two africans, livistonii and blood jewel, in a tank with an O, 2jacks, a tex., a con., a uro., 2 parachromis, a channel cat and a common pleco, they have been together for at least 2 years
