As of late I've been slightly complacent with my hobby, not much has changed for the last 4 months in my world. My cutteri pair in the 20 may have bred just today but I digress...

I've decided to risk never hearing the end of it from the lady and am setting up my old 15 gallon again underneath my 20 to do another pair breeding project. I've bred cutteri, HRP, and convicts before and would feel bad putting any of those fish in a 15 since I know their true potential now... I've been torn on a few species and would like your input.

-Bolivian Rams (had a trio of males in my old 37 a while back, interesting to watch, never bred obviously)
-Kribensis (I know, African, but I've always been interested and know they stay smaller)
-Laetacara curviceps (Probably the species I'm most interested in since I've never had their genus before).
-Lastly I've also thought about a ghost shrimp tank with some Emperor tetras (my LFS actually has these) or jumbo black neons.

What are your thoughts? Tank will be well filtered as I have an AC 30 laying around as well as a Hydor IV sponge filter. Just looking to spice up the hobby a little here as I feel I don't have the excitement I usually do. Thanks all.

I'd go for kribs, or more specifically, one of the less common pelvicachromis species. I think they are relatively easy to breed if you have soft water, plus there would be more of a market for fry than common kribs.

I've kept laetacara in the past, but always in communities in larger tanks. I just don't know if they'd be comfortable in a 15. Maybe others with more specific experience can chime in.

There's always African shellies the shell breeders that stay really small

This is what I would do if I had an extra small tank laying around. The shell dwellers have such cool behavior that is so different than what us CA/SA people are used to, plus they stay small. I don't think the Laetacara curviceps would be comfortable in a 15. If you can find pelvicachromis taeniatus, they could work and are really nice looking(plus I'm sure you wouldn't have issues selling the fry).

Lately ive been going fancy inverts with small tanks and its been very rewarding. Shrimp and snails and some plants look nice and might make u a few bucks.

But if u wanna keep it cichlid my vote is the kribs also.

I do have a T5HO fixture sitting around at home too that is meant for a 30" tank but the bulb is 24" ;) Would any plants be alright in gravel? (Such as java fern, anubias, microswords, etc) I also have some seachem flourish excel left over from my last planted tank adventure

I actually have gravel in my shrimp tank and anacharis, and mosses and parrots feather(which is what i use) do fine with gravel. I usually for a shrimp tank just get huge wads of moss, or "bushy" plants that dont need to be rooted and just make a huge ball. My shrimp tank looks like a forest lol. Go for it!!!
